Does inclusion matter? Research shows that diverse teams are better at making decisions 87% of the time over non-diverse teams. With diversity, different perspectives are infused into one’s own thoughts and ideas. Team members function like collected data, without sufficient datapoints, we construct models with severe biases, resulting in less accurate predictions and decisions-making. Furthermore, diverse teams attract more intelligent candidates into applying, which enriches the organization professionally.

Then why are biases so inherent to be removed from individuals? With enormous amount of internet feed everyday, our perceptions bear the risk of being shaped by deliberately designed algorithms that determine what information should be conveyed to whom, which in return, nurtures the bias.

It is said “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”, because bias and ignorance are born with us, it requires us to make persevering efforts to get a broader understanding of the world on a deeper level. For example, you might be surprised on how language shapes the way we think. As a bilingual woman in tech field, it has been astonishing how our mechanisms differ behind seemingly identical facades. By peeking through multiple angles, we get the chance to tune our perceptions, calibrate our ideas, profoundly.
